My good friend Leighton Dancy recently travelled to the time warp of a town that is Galveston, TX to photograph the abandoned railcars of this once stately city. Long ago the capital of The Republic of Texas and one of the busiest ports in the nation, Galveston was all but destroyed by a hurricane in 1900 and never fully recovered from the storm. The natural disaster remains the deadliest in American history. So, I don't know when these trains stopped running (I'd imagine probably not until the 50s), but in many ways they've gone the same way of the city that began its deterioration over 100 years ago. Beautiful work Leighton.

Norse Projects Photos

Season in and season out, Denmark's Norse Projects is one of the more easily recognizable lines in men's clothing. It's all navy and white and horizontal-striped. Very nautical-influenced. But this ain't about the clothes. It's about the images that accompany their website and look books, etc. etc.. I don't know who the photographer is, but the images he / she captures are unique as Norse's line of clothing.

Two weeks. Man, that's too long. That's just no good. I used to pride myself on updating this damn thing every day of the work week, but between STAG and the holidays and life in general, I've drifted off course. I guess that's just the way it is.

But here's a new one. Michael Muller (of the great blog In The Choirs) spent 30 some odd hours at my house the other week shooting products for STAG. While he was at it, he snapped a bunch of shots of my house. They both ended up featured recently on The Scout, but here are some extras - and I think they look better in the slightly larger Blogger format as opposed to the small slideshow form that The Scout employs. Thx for the shots Miguel.

"Dazzle camouflage, also known as Razzle Dazzle or Dazzle painting, was a camouflage paint scheme used on ships, extensively during World War I and to a lesser extent in World War II. Credited to artist Norman Wilkinson, it consisted of a complex pattern of geometric shapes in contrasting colours, interrupting and intersecting each other.

At first glance Dazzle seems unlikely camouflage, drawing attention to the ship rather than hiding it, but this technique was developed after the Allied Navies were unable to develop effective means to disguise ships in all weathers.

Dazzle did not conceal the ship but made it difficult for the enemy to estimate its type, size, speed and heading. The idea was to disrupt the visual rangefinders used for naval artillery. Its purpose was confusion rather than concealment. An observer would find it difficult to know exactly whether the stern or the bow is in view; and it would be equally difficult to estimate whether the observed vessel is moving towards or away from the observer's position." - Wiki

My friend Bruce Webb turned me onto these last night. They're from a Library of Congress collection of Civil War soldiers - mostly from the Union side and all devastatingly beautiful. It still blows my mind that we had a Civil War in this country. 600,000 Americans died at the hands of one another.

As a kid in Louisiana (state motto = "the sportsman's paradise"), I grew up duck hunting with friends and family, but I never caught the bug like a lot of my buddies did. I pretty much stopped hunting by the time I was 16 or so and didn't pick up a shotgun again until a few years ago when I moved back South to Texas. A couple of years ago, I went on a dove hunt in West Texas and had a blast, but it wasn't until this past week in Idaho that I caught the bug (and the birds) in a real bad (meaning good) way.

My dad had booked a steelhead trout fishing trip to the Flying B Ranch in Kamiah, Idaho, and it was our plan to fish a couple days on the Clearwater River - home to massive steelheads (and onetime home of Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce nation). After a day freezing our asses off on the river and only catching a couple of steelheads (it sometimes takes days to catch one so we didn't do so bad), I thought it'd be nice to explore the mountains with guns in hand and see what we could track down. With bird dogs criss-crossing the hills in a feat of cardiac endurance that would quickly put a man in his grave, we hiked for miles on end firing away at pheasant, grouse, chuckers, and huns. I've never had anywhere close to that much fun hunting. I'm hooked.

Hazey Fairless has turned out to be much more than just an employee of mine at STAG. She's one of the sweetest, gentlest, kindest, most interesting souls I've ever come across, and it'll be a sad day when she packs up for Philly next month. Oh, and did I mention that NOBODY can touch her sense of style. After the Pixies show the other week, we decided it'd be a good idea to get out my .38 Special and great grandfather's 1898 Colt .25 and do a little photo shoot. Some of the shots below.

I just watched a great Smithsonian Channel show called "Play on John: A Life in Music" - a documentary on the life and work of John Cohen. Cohen is a filmmaker, artist, musician, and photographer who was one of the first to capture a young Bob Dylan (among other Beats) on film. And perhaps more important than his photographic work (though stunning in its beauty), his work as a musicologist helped form the Folk Music Revival of the 50s and 60s and brought such luminaries as Ralph Stanley, Doc Watson, Mississippi John Hurt any many more from the rural hills and farms of the South to the big stage in New York City. Quite an impressive life.

I've never purchased a piece of "modern" furniture for my own home, and my affinity for the stuff in general has waned over the past couple of years, but I still have a thing for contemporary pieces that mix metal and wood in a stark, utilitarian way - probably because I like so much the industrial wood and metal mixed pieces of old machine shops and factories. This Adaptable table by Muuto can be constructed in 36 leg, top, frame combinations. Pretty good.
